Beautiful rolling hills define Bonsall, a rural, hillside community east of Oceanside and north of Vista. The community was begun after John Bonsall, a Methodist minister, was hauling lumber through Gopher Canyon more than a century ago and was struck by the beauty of the place. He built a house and planted a fruit orchard in 1879. The town was first known as Mount Fairview.
The annual Grand Prix at Brookside Farms Classic Horse Show is a world-class jumping event with a $50,000 purse. San Luis Rey Downs Country Club and track are local landmarks.
