Queen of the San Diego beach towns, La Jolla is probably the best known city in the area. Hillsides facing the ocean are the sites of million-dollar homes. There is a well-defined business district downtown along Prospect Street, a popular gathering place with many restaurants and shops. The best walk in the city passes along a scenic coastline park on Coast Boulevard.
La Jolla hosts the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art and the Stephen Birch Aquarium. Great beaches are found at La Jolla Shores and at Blacks Beach. The Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the University of California at San Diego, and the Torrey Pines Golf Course are also located here.
