Mission Valley is defined by the San Diego River, which runs through the center of it. Noted for several large shopping malls and auto dealerships, Interstate 8 also runs through its length, soon to be followed by a new segment of the San Diego Trolley. The are is named for Mission San Diego, founded by Junipero Serra in 1769, which was originally located at what is now Presidio Park. The mission was moved to its present location at the East End of Mission Valley on San Diego Mission Road in 1774.
Since its restoration in 1931, it has been a functioning parish church. Businesses, condominiums, and apartment complexes now dominate what once was pastureland in the valley. This area, known as Hotel Circle, is the home of San Diego's Jack Murphy Stadium.
