San Marcos was once part of a large Mexican rancho. Orchards surround this community which has considerable undeveloped acreage. Today a large percentage of the agricultural industry in the North County is here. An Up-and-coming incorporated town, San Marcos lies between Carlsbad and Escondido and is home to the California State University, San Marcos.
Other amenities include: two large country clubs, Lake San Marcos, Twin Oaks Valley, two colleges, golf courses, ranches, lovely residential homes, and a variety of restaurants. It is a town in transition with budding commercial centers like the North County Factory Outlet along Highway 78.
