Normal Heights is a residential neighborhood on the south rim of Mission Valley, named for the former San Diego Normal School, a teacher-education college. The area is noted for a large number of antique shops and used bookstores. Many homes along the valley rim have commanding views across the San Diego River and out to the ocean. Adams Avenue is the main business district area, and an annual street fair in September stretches for blocks near the large neon Normal Heights neighborhood sign. Other events include music festivals and an antique car show.
Many older homes can be found in the area which was one of San Diego's early suburbs. The neighborhood's location between Interstates 15 and 805 just south of 8 gives easy access to almost anywhere.
